One Nation under Obama?

Jan 20 (2009) truly was a historical day in our nation’s history, and emotional one for millions of people all over the world.

Two million people stood on the National Mall in Washington DC on that chilly winter morning to take part in the ceremony, and I, like millions of my fellow citizens, sat glued to the television witnessing the grandeur of it all, believing once again that America truly was the land of opportunity that we’d all hoped it would be.

Witnessing President Obama take the Oath of Office on our nation’s Capital was both surreal and awe-inspiring at the same time, and as he delivered a speech that was simply remarkable, not at all like the precedent speeches that relied mainly on dogma and simplistic mantras, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride knowing that this inspirational man that stood before me was now the leader of our country.

Then, the cynics began voicing their opinion, dwelling upon the pettiest of puerile contentiousness. They ranted that that he’d flubbed the Oath of Office, oblivious to the fact that it was the Chief of Justice, who’d conducted the Oath, that couldn’t manage to recite the 35-words; or forgetting that for the past 8 years, we were privy to a benighted president who was incapable of completing a sentence without a teleprompter and whose speeches were barely coherent.

The truth of the matter is that some of President Obama’s opponents and much of the people who’d voted for them can’t and won’t “set aside childish things”, and they will look for anything and everything that will signal the downfall of this administration, forgetting that the preceding administration has left our nation with over $10 trillion in debt, the worse economical condition/crisis since the Great Depression, and a war that has already lasted for years longer than America’s involvement in World War II.

And although it would be nice to think that with the magnitude of problem facing our nation, we could all come together and move forward as one. Unfortunately, it seems that all it matters to them is that their guy lost, whatever principles that they’d held dear no longer applies, and that the world around them is changing.
